News: Lynx Battle Impact Home & Home
Posted on Wednesday, June 04 @ 12:53:23 EDT by rhi

Leagues Fresh off their three-game U.S. road trip, the Lynx take to the road again on Friday, June 6th to take on the Montreal Impact at 7:30 pm in the front end of a weekend home-and-home series.

Montreal is one of the hottest teams in the league, riding a 6-game unbeaten streak going into this weekend’s matches, coming off a successful Western road-trip having beaten Vancouver, 1-0, and Calgary, 4-0, over the weekend.

Star striker, Eduardo Sebrango had his first break out game of the season in Calgary, recording 2 goals and 2 assists. Midfielder, Martin Nash, is also welcomed back by the Impact along with defender Nevio Pizzolitto who represented Canada on Sunday in the international friendly in Germany.

ANNUAL GIRL POWER DAY THIS SUNDAY!

The Lynx will host their annual Girl Power Day honouring the growing power of women in soccer and other walks of life with the return engagement versus Montreal on Sunday, June 8 at 4:00 pm at Centennial Park Stadium.

Many girl youth soccer clubs will be out in full force and some of the finest female soccer players in our country from the W-League’s Toronto Inferno squad: Tina Blaskovic, 2001 W-League MVP; Melanie Booth, played for Canada U19 World Cup and on present World Cup squad; Holly Lincoln on U19 squad; and Anne Ogundele, the Inferno goalkeeper who originates from the Oakville Soccer Club will be on hand to greet and meet soccer fans.

In addition to valuable divisional points, this weekend’s matches are doubly important as the results will count toward the Voyageurs Cup and Can-Am Cup. This second annual Voyageurs Cup tracks all head-to-head meetings between the A-League’s Canadian teams; the Toronto Lynx, Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps and Calgary Storm which was created and funded entirely by the Voyageurs Canadian Soccer Fan Club.

With the Impact edging out the Lynx to claim last year’s inaugural competition, this weekend’s contests will go a long way towards crowning the 2003 champion. This season marks the inaugural Can-Am Cup competition between the clubs in the North East Division. The cup-style tournament will be played over 12 games, featuring home-and-away series for all four teams with the two top teams facing off in the Can-Am Cup Final match on July 30th. The Lynx will be traveling to Rochester on Wednesday, June 11th for a special Can-Am Cup match against the Raging Rhinos.

MATTACCHIONE EARNS TEAM OF THE WEEK HONOURS!

Lynx midfielder Joe Mattacchione was named to the A-League Team of the Week for the seventh week of the season. Joe Mattacchione originates from the Dixie Soccer Club and Mississauga Soccer Club and had a stellar collegiate career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham before joining the Lynx in 1999.

Mattacchione scored the game-winning goal in the Lynx 1-0 upset of the Virginia Beach Mariners and had the assist on Brian Ashton’s goal in the 1-1 draw with the Charlotte Eagles last week. Strong play from Mattacchione and the rest of the Lynx midfield will be the key as the Lynx look to improve their divisional standing and secure valuable Voyageurs Cup and Can-Am Cup points versus Montreal this weekend.

For tickets call the Lynx ticket line at 416-251-4625 ext. 31 or visit the Lynx website.
