News: Germany Hosts Women's 2011 Cup, CSSU Calls For CSA REview

Canadians shouldn’t be surprised that this country’s bid to host the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup was rejected today.
By selecting Germany, despite all-but promising the tournament to Canada four years ago, FIFA is sending the Canadian Soccer Association a clear message—get your house in order.
Canadian Soccer Supporters United, the group that organized last month’s successful Black Wednesday T-Shirt protest at the National Soccer Stadium, has learned that, following a thorough audit of the CSA constitution, FIFA advised the CSA that their constitution was outmoded and needed to significantly updated in order to fall into line with FIFA governance standards.
Specifically, FIFA has taken issue with the CSA’s failure to institute a one province, one vote policy. Currently, the CSA’s voting structure gives greater voting power to the largest provinces, which FIFA objects to.
“While disappointed that this tournament will be held in Germany rather than Canada, we can’t imagine that FIFA would want to grant another major tournament to a country that is unwilling to adhere to FIFA’s most basic governance rules,” CSSU co-founder Dino Rossi said.
“FIFA has asked the CSA to fix it, but the CSA has told us that the Board of Directors will not approve such an amendment to the constitution.”
Rossi and members of his group learned of FIFA’s reform request during a meeting between representatives of the CSA and CSSU last week. He said that it is disappointing to learn that the CSA would not take a direct request from FIFA more seriously.
“Canadian soccer, and Canada itself, has lost a tremendous opportunity here,” Rossi said. “One can only imagine what impact the Women’s World Cup would have had for Canadian soccer, especially to the women’s program.”
“Hopefully, the leadership at the CSA can fix this problem and refocus its efforts at landing this tournament in 2015.”
Rossi reiterated the CSSU’s call for an independent review of the CSA, with an eye for reforming the organization. He pointed to Australia’s Crawford Report as a template that Canadian officials could follow in undertaking the review.

Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell announced his roster today for the international friendly match against Costa
Rica taking place on September 12 at BMO field (19:00). The team will
be gathering in Toronto this week for training sessions in lead up to
the match.
“It has been some time since the men’s national team has played in Toronto and I believe our players are looking forward to the
strong support,” said head coach Dale Mitchell.
“We have selected a roster that is capable of continuing the positive play that the team
has shown throughout the summer.”
Canada last faced Costa Rica during the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. They defeated the 52nd ranked Costa Ricans 2:1 in the opening match of the group stage.
This match will be the first for the Canadian senior men’s team in Toronto since 2000. It will also be Dale Mitchell’s first time

94 min … game ends.
Notes
Attendance finished at about 100 people although it started with only about 40 on hot humid late afternoon with the sun coming out from behind the clouds at different times of the game. Columbus was considered the home team for this game although the fans were mostly pro Windsor. The Border Stars were warming up with only nine guys as there were some caught in a traffic jam on the 401 on the 200 km drive from the south west to get here. (Toronto where I’m from is about 200 km away in the east). They ended up with a full team and three subs on the bench. The prospect of silver ball overtime (two 15 minute halves) wouldn’t have been too appealing.
Columbus from Vancouver British Columbia had many names I recognized from years of watching the USL and A-League Vancouver 86ers/Whitecaps once a season when they’d play Toronto Lynx. Tony Gaita and Gino Gaita are brothers and started today’s game.
Both teams looked good offensively but both their defenses looked suspect. Both teams had to have their goalie’s make some good saves or the score could have been doubled. This may not put them in a position to play the other winning semi-finalist Trois-Rivieres Attak who won the evening’s other semi-final.
The Border Stars had won the trophy in 2004 and 2005. London City won in the inaugural 2003 year and Ottawa St Anthony Italia won in 2006 (and didn’t enter to defend this year).

Trois-Rivieres Attak [2] Italia Shooters [1]
Highlights
15 min … Attak Alex Surprenant pulls down IS Geron Duporte on rush on right of box. Referee Justin Tasev signals for a Penalty kick.
16 min … Shooters Chris Turner GOAL
Turner’s penalty kick is to left side as goalie slides the wrong way.
42 min … Attak Mohammed Nafe GOAL
Attak’s Jean Phillip Etienne on left side of box receives cornerkick from the right and his cross is cleared however Nafe sends in low 40 yard shot through crowd of players and into the net.
48 min (1st half added time) … Attak Boubacar Coulibaly GOAL
Coulibaly has ball at 20 yards on left and turns with goalie off his line and fires low 20 yard shot that deflects off IS Alex Ruhe Lischke and past sprawling goalie Camilo Benzi into short left corner of net.
72 min … Shooters RED card
Defender Andre Stewart given direct ejection for knocking Attak Joe Di Buono near side line after whistle.
97 min (2nd half added time) …Shooters RED card
Jason DeThomasis given direct ejection for a foul and abuse although the game was already over.
Notes
Attendance was about 100 people on this mild night. It’s already dark before the game starts. The crowd was pro-Italia Shooters as it was about 200 km from Toronto. Shooters had beaten the hosts London City 4-2 the night before in the Wild Card game. The players did not stay in the city but drove home and came back the next day.
With Monday’s final now between a British Columbia team and a Quebec team, they’ll be lucky to get 100 people. Tickets were only $10.00.
Shooters lost a lot of their momentum as soon as they went down to ten men. Attak used some time wasting tactics which didn’t impress the referee who added six minutes of added time. The game got very rough in the second half. Funniest Yellow card though was to Nicolas Lesage at 90 minutes when no Attak player moved in to take a freekick from near the edge of the Shooters box. After waiting for someone to come up to the ball, the referee gave Lesage the card when he stepped forward to take the kick.
Shooters roster has swelled to three 2007 PDL Toronto Lynx players as defenders Rick Titus and Alex Ruhe-Lischke (Lynx 2007 MVP) and midfielder Cameron Medwin played all 90 minutes in today’s game. Attak are the farm team of the USL Montreal Impact so any of their players could be called up to the main team.
Shooters wore the worst uniforms I’ve ever seen with white numbers on white shirts. The numbers were whiter than the shirts but not distinguishable from a distance. The fourth official worked out a deal with the announcers box in that he’d hold up a numbers card so they could announce who scored a goal.

The Clan, current British Columbia senior champions, were full marks for the win after dominating the opening 10 minutes but missing three clear chances before Poli opened the scoring at the 11th minute mark.

Following a 2-2 tie at the interval, Radek Papiez scored his second for Windsor at 56 minutes for a 3-2 lead, but Columbus Clan again tied the game, a 3-3 score when forward Steve De Blasio put the ball past Border Stars’ goalkeeper Anthony Santilli.
With the score at 3-3 and the game heading into overtime, Poli came up with the winner at the 93rd minute for a 4-3 result to put the British Columbia side into the final.
Chris Turner put Italia Shooters in the lead from a penalty kick at 16 minutes of the second semifinal, after referee Justin Tasev pointed to the spot on a Trois-Rivieres foul just inside the box.
The Attak tied the score 1-1 when Mohammed Nafe struck at the 42nd. minute mark and the Quebec-based team went ahead 2-1 at 45 minutes on a well-taken goal by midfielder Boubacar Coulibaly.
The second half was quick and physical and at the 73rd minute Italia’s Andre Stewart was shown the red card for violent conduct.
Italia pressed for an equalizer, but Trois-Rivieres held on for the 2-1 win.

LINFORD SAYS GOODBYE
Colin Linford resigned as president of the Canadian Soccer Association yesterday.
Then
“I am honoured to be elected as the first CSA President with a four-year term. I look forward to the challenges of hosting the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007 and to promote the sport to all Canadians.”
Now
It was a "lack of support from a majority of the executive and the board" of directors of the CSA that led him to his decision.
