SAAC to Hold September All-Star Games at CSL Stadiums
Soccer Academy Alliance Canada (SAAC) is pleased to announce that it has confirmed dates and venues for it's 2007 All-Star Games. For the second straight year, SAAC will be holding these events in conjunction with professional matches involving teams from the Canadian Soccer League.
On Sunday September 9th, the top U14 boys from the Academies will face off at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York. The game kicks off at 5:15 pm, prior to the North York Astros vs Serbian White Eagles game that kicks off at 7:00 pm.
The six member Academies with teams in this program - ANB Academy, DP Soccer, Bryst FA, Score Soccer, AC Milan Academy and Santos FC Ontario will be sending their top players to participate in this event.
On Sunday September 23rd, the top U15-U18 boys from the Academies will face off at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan for the 2nd Annual Boys Showcase All-Star Game. The game kicks off at 6:00 pm, prior to the Italia Shooters vs. Canadian Lions game that will start at 7:30 pm.
The 6 member Academies with teams in this program - ANB Academy, Bryst FA, Winstars Academy, 1v1 Soccer, DP Soccer and Power Player Academy will be sending their top players to participate in this event.
"These events help us to promote two areas that are very important to SAAC and the member Academies" commented Lino Terra, Commissioner of SAAC. "They allow us to provide recognition and exposure to some of our top players as well as help show all of our members that there is very good soccer played at the senior level right in our backyard.". He added, "if we can work together with organizations such as the CSL to produce a true soccer development pyramid from eight years old right up to the pros, we may be able to keep our top players in the game long enough so that some of them can develop into world class professionals."
SAAC will be selling discounted tickets to both matches that will be good for both the SAAC game and the CSL match that follows. These tickets can only be purchased through SAAC and its member Academies.
About Soccer Academy Alliance Canada - www.academysoccer.ca
Soccer Academy Alliance Canada (SAAC) is a Not-for-Profit Corporation formed by a forward-looking group of private Ontario soccer academies. SAAC believes that, while many of today’s youth soccer players in Canada are adequately served by the current system, the one lacking ingredient is an elite player development environment conducted by professional coaches on par with professional club academies in other parts of the world.
The Ontario-based academies that currently make up SAAC have been able to provide these services on a part-time basis for players in the existing system, but believe the introduction of a full-time professional program is long overdue.
SAAC member academies will strive to train, develop and promote, as well as maximize soccer opportunities for talented Canadian players. They will also ensure that the best young players have access to the highest standards of coaching.
About the Canadian Soccer League - www.canadiansoccerleague.ca
The Canadian Soccer League (CSL) is Canada’s only professional league and is a continuation of earlier leagues, the National Soccer League, the Canadian National Soccer League and the Canadian Professional Soccer League, going back more than 80 years.
The CSL presently operates teams in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec and has adopted a mandate to expand on a regional basis to other parts of Canada.
The CSL operates two divisions – a National Conference of teams in Windsor, St. Catharines, London, North York and Toronto and the Province of Quebec - and an International Division of teams in the Toronto area which represent their country of origin.

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that midfielder Devin Gunenc (Gun-nesh) and defender/midfielder Greg Smith, both from North Vancouver, BC, have become the first signings of Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency.
“We are very pleased to have our first two players signed to our residency program,” said Whitecaps Residency Managing Director/Head Coach, Thomas Niendorf.
"In preparation for the program starting in September, we will be sending both Greg and Devin along with other selected players to Europe in July. They will play as guests in the U-19 Bundesliga pre-season training with top German clubs such as FC Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich."
Gunenc, 17, is a member of Canada’s men’s U-17 national team. He played in three U-17 World Cup qualifying games this past April against Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Trinidad & Tobago. In 2006, he played four games in the Ballymena International Tournament in Northern Ireland and four games in the Trinidad & Tobago-held CONCACAF U-16 Caribbean Football Union’s Youth Cup. In 2005, Gunenc appeared in all six games in the Caribbean Cup, which saw Canada rollover the competition and ultimately defeat Guatemala 4-0 in the final.
Gunenc was also member of the North Shore Selects U-17 league championship team last year. The five-foot-eleven, 165-pound midfielder has also played with the BC Provincial Team from 2004 to 2006 at U-14 and U-16 levels respectively. Gunenc has earned tryouts in England for Chelsea FC’s reserve team, and Newcastle United’s U-18 team. Gunenc is wrapping-up grade 11 at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in North Vancouver.
Greg Smith, 17, is also a member of Canada’s U-17 national team. Smith, who was born in White Rock, BC, but raised in North Vancouver, played in the three U-17 World Cup qualifying games this past April. He was a member of the national team that played in the Ballymena International Tournament and Caribbean Cup tournaments in 2006 and 2005. In addition, defender/midfielder played in the Copa Chivas tournament last winter.
Smith was also a teammate of Gunenc with the BC Provincial Team from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, with Smith as captain, the pair guided the U-16 team to a bronze medal. In 2005, also at the U-16 team level, the pair earned gold medal honours and in 2004, at the U-14 level the team captured a bronze medal.
The five-foot-ten, 165-pound Smith is a member of FC Blaze of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s First Division, and his youth experience includes playing for the U-16 and U-18 North Shore Selects. Smith current attends Windsor Secondary School in North Vancouver, where he has gained assistant soccer coaching experience the last two years.
2007 Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency schedule:
July 15 - August 15: German Bundesliga pre-season training camps
Selected players will participate as guest players in U-19
Bundesliga pre-season training with top German clubs including FC Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich
